Thursday 17th March 2022, St Patrick's Day / Lá Féile Pádraic and Friday 18 March are public holidays in Ireland.   

Most public transport services will run a Sunday timetable on both days. 

On Thursday, many services will have different routes or stops during the day, due to St Patrick's Day parades and events.

Easter 2021 bus and train services

Easter this year is from Friday 2 - Monday 5 April 2021.

Good Friday (the 2nd) is a bank holiday but not a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland:  All banks and many public services (eg post-office) are closed, but most public-transport will operate according to their normal Friday timetables.

Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are not public holidays:  usual Sat / Sun timetables generally apply.

Easter Monday is a public holiday and a bank holiday, and in most cases Sunday timetables apply.

Information from bus and train companies is summarised below.  Always confirm details with the company.  Bookings are recommended, because there are a number of events happening this weekend.

Update:  since this was published, several bus-companies have announced on-going timetable changed due to the Covid-19 virus pandemic.  Please check with the company for updated information before planning any travel.


Also Tuesday 17th March 2019St Patrick's Day / Lá Féile Pádraic is a public holiday in Ireland.   Most public transport services will run a Sunday timetable.    

The Corona virus closedown means that the traditional parades will not be occurring, so services should run according to the timetable.

Sunday 17th March 2019, St Patrick's Day / Lá Féile Pádraic is a public holiday in Ireland.   Most public transport services will run a Sunday timetable.    Most towns and cities will have a parade around lunchtime or in the early afternoon: morning public transport services are likely to be busy due to this.

Monday 19th March 2018 is a Bank Holiday, 
but not Public Holiday.  Banks will be closed,  Some businesses, especially ones that don't usually open on Sunday, will close to give their staff a day's holiday.  Because of this, most public transport companies will run a Sunday timetable.

Bank, public services and government departments will be closed on Monday 7 May.  Most shops will keep their regular Sunday hours on Monday the 7th also.

Easter this year is from Friday 30 March  -  Monday 2 April 2018.

Good Friday (the 14th) is a bank holiday but not a public holiday in the Republic of Ireland:  All banks and many public services (eg post-office) are closed, and some other companies treat the day like a public holiday and close anyway.   However most public-transport run normal services, with a few exceptions.

Following a recent law change this is the first year when all pubs, hotel bars and off-licenses are allowed to be open on Good Friday if they usually open on Fridays.   Anecdotal feedback is that most, but not all, will open,

Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday are not public holidays:  usual Sat / Sun timetables generally apply.

Easter Monday is a public holiday and a bank holiday, and in most cases Sunday services will be run.

Bus and train services for the August bank holiday, 2017

Monday 7 August 2017 is a bank / public holiday in Ireland, so there are some changes to public transport:




City Bus Services

Bus Éireann and City Direct will run their their standard Sunday city services in Galway on Sunday 6 and Monday 7 August.



Regional Bus Services    

A standard Sunday timetable applies for most regional and national public transport services on both Sunday and Monday.

However:
  • On Sunday 6th August, Bus Éireann will operate a Sunday timetable, except that the 3:30pm Dundalk to Galway and 6pm Galway to Dundalk services are cancelled.
  • On Monday 7th August, Bus Éireann will operate a Sunday timetable with a number of changes (both cancellations and additions) that affect Galway services.    See their announcement for full detail.
  • Bus Feda (Galway - Donegal) will run a limited service on Sunday, and an extended service on the Monday.   See their announcement for details.


Train services

On Sunday Irish Rail will run a normal Sunday service, except that these services are cancelled:
  • 5pm Galway to Dublin
  • 8:30pm Dublin to Galway, 
Also, the 7:25pm Galway to Athlone is replaced with a Galway to Dublin train.

On Monday, Irish Rail will run a timetable based on the normal Monday service, but with these services cancelled:
  • 5:30am Galway to Dublin
  • 5:55am Limerick to Galway
  • 6:20am Galway to Limerick
  • 8:40am Galway to Athenry 
  • 9:05an Athenry to Galway
  • 6:30pm Dublin to Galway
  • 10:15pm Galway to Athlone.
